Design legend Barbara Barry was asked in an interview to predict the design trends that will define the next 25 years.

“I actually see the lack of a predominate style. We will become even freer to take in and synthesize all that we see around us and make it our own.”

Barry was certainly onto something here. The lines between styles in the design world are becoming less and less distinct. And the proof is in the transitional trend.

Combining elements from both traditional and contemporary styles, transitional designs done right are classic yet fresh, timeless yet current and elegant yet relaxed. What’s more is this style can truly be customized to create a unique combination and balance of these elements.

As design writer and editor Lisa Frederick says, “It’s about meeting in the middle, but it’s not at all middle of the road.”

A marriage of old and new, the style can pay homage to timeless forms while making striking statements with modern decor. But fusing two disparate styles requires solicitous editing and an acute understanding of lines, forms and colors. Different designers will have different strategies to achieve harmony.
