Drum lights don’t get the attention they deserve. If we only give them neutral fabric and a basic finish, all they can provide is a nice geometric shape. But, with thoughtful design, drum lights can be dressed up to add much more. Subtle details and elements that add a surprising splash of elegance, whimsy or glamour can empower drum lights to stand out and actually enhance materials instead of simply blending into the background.
Let’s start with the shade. Interesting materials such as art glass, parchments, eco-resins, acrylics, rawhide, semi-precious stones and mesh can add unique colors and textures to drum shades.
Architect magazine did a spotlight on one drum design that featured stunning frosted, tempered glass lenses and – believe it or not – repurposed cardboard boxes! Of course, you would never have known simply by looking at the fixture; it’s gorgeous. Luxury looks that are also unique and interesting can be achieved using almost any material as long as it’s combined with creativity, quality treatments and careful craftsmanship.
Going beyond the shade, drums can be accented with hand-crafted embellishments that will allow every component of the fixture to add aesthetic value. Blown glass finials, rod accents, globe diffusers and decorative metalwork are just a few examples of small accents that have a large impact.
And I know we all love the traditional round shape of the drum. But why not bend the rules a little for the sake of style and sophistication? As Annie Selke told Elle Decor, don’t limit yourself with strict design rules: “Pleasing your own eye” is key.
