A Whole-Home Custom Lighting Story in Helena, Montana
With more than 30 years of experience in custom lighting design, Hammerton has learned that the most compelling spaces are never one-size-fits-all. They are personal, intentional, and thoughtfully layered—often beginning not with a specification sheet, but with a conversation, a feeling, or a sketch on a napkin.
This custom home lighting project that displays 50+ Hammerton fixtures in Helena, Montana, exemplifies what’s possible when vision, craftsmanship, and collaboration come together to create lighting that feels both elevated and livable.
From Familiar Trust to a Whole-Home Vision

The homeowner came to Hammerton with a strong sense of confidence, having lived with our lighting in a previous home. Her initial request focused on a single space: a great room concept featuring individual rock crystal pendants with escutcheon plates.
As conversations evolved, so did the scope.
What began as a one-off idea soon became a full custom home lighting project—one that allowed every fixture to work together as part of a cohesive whole. She had a clear vision for how the home should feel, but needed a partner to help translate that vision into form, material, and light.
That partnership became the foundation of the design process.
Designing for Life, Not Just for Looks

This home marked an important new chapter. Having relocated to Helena to be closer to her children, the goal was to create a space that felt warm, grounded, and unmistakably like a family home—without sacrificing artistry or refinement.
Hammerton designers, Levi Wilson and Davis Seegmiller, worked closely with the homeowner to ensure the lighting supported both the architecture and the way the home would be lived in. Rather than prescribing solutions, they posed a defining question:
“How do you want to personalize this to your home?”
That question shifted the project from beautiful to meaningful.
Material-Led Custom Lighting Design

The answer came from an unexpected place: the living room leather sofa.
That leather became a unifying material throughout the home’s custom lighting design, creating continuity from space to space. In the great room, it was integrated into a custom three-tier Aalto chandelier, grounding the scale of the fixture with warmth, color, and texture. The same leather detailing was carried into the foyer on the custom Gem Modern Vine chandelier and echoed again in the custom Gem Mandrel Sconces—creating a cohesive design language that traveled beautifully throughout the home.

Spatial constraints were addressed with the same level of intention. Above the stairwell, a sprawling custom Gem Flush Mount was created to meet low-ceiling requirements while maintaining visual impact—demonstrating how custom lighting solutions can be both functional and eye-catching.
Thoughtful Details in Every Space

Each room in the home was approached individually, with lighting selected or customized to reflect its purpose and personality.
-
Inspired by the 2,500-year old art of glass mosaic tiling, the Tessera Ring Chandelier was chosen for the puzzle room—a natural fit, both visually and conceptually.
-
Though each space features lighting tailored to its purpose, recurring silhouettes create cohesion throughout the home. Ring forms—seen in both the Tessera Ring and Hammerton Signature Odeon chandelier—establish a shared visual language, proving how thoughtful design repetition can unify diverse spaces.
-
Beyond aesthetics, lighting was thoughtfully layered to create shifts in mood from room to room, reinforcing how custom design supports both atmosphere and function.
-
Throughout the home, fixture scale, mounting styles, glass selection, and material details were refined to ensure every piece felt intentional within its environment.
This level of flexibility is at the heart of Hammerton’s approach. With more than 50% of our work rooted in custom lighting, we regularly support projects ranging from subtle modifications to entirely new designs built from the ground up.
A Collaborative Effort, Recognized

This Helena home was brought to life in collaboration with Sierra Custom Homes and Distinctive Lighting in Bozeman, whose partnership helped ensure the vision was executed with precision and care. The completed home was recognized as a Parade of Homes Winner during the Fall 2025 show, celebrating the seamless integration of architecture, craftsmanship, and custom home lighting throughout the space.
